Football Gifts for Grandad: 8 Retro Ideas He'll Treasure

Grandads remember it all: the rattles, the standing terraces, the heavy cotton shirts and the results read out on a Saturday teatime. If you are stuck for a present that will actually raise a smile, a retro football gift that brings those memories back is hard to beat. Here are eight ideas for the football-mad grandad, with personalisation tips to make each one his own.

Why Retro Football Gifts Work So Well for Grandad

Ask most grandads what they would like for Christmas or their birthday and you will hear "nothing, I've got everything". The trick is to give him something that is about him: his club, his era and his memories. A design inspired by the kit he grew up watching, printed with his name or a number that means something, says far more than another pair of socks.

Everything below is designed and printed to order by our family-run team in Yorkshire, and our designs cover clubs right down through the leagues and into Scotland. If his team is not listed, there is an option to upload your own design too.

8 Retro Football Gift Ideas for Grandad

1. A Personalised Retro Fleece Blanket

Our retro football fleece blankets are a generous 150cm x 150cm, printed edge to edge on plush 370gsm fleece and hand-sewn to finish. Each one features a retro-inspired shirt design that you can personalise with a name, initials or a short message. A good example is the Newcastle 1996 Home Shirt Retro Fleece Blanket.

Perfect for: the grandad who watches every match from his favourite armchair.

Why it works: it is cosy, practical and machine washable at 30 degrees (drip dry), and in summer it doubles as a picnic blanket.

Personalisation idea: "Grandad" with the year he first stood on the terraces as his number.

2. A Retro Shirt Cushion

Our shirt-shaped cushions are approximately 38cm x 38cm, made from faux suede with a removable zip cover and an inner made in-house. You can personalise them with initials, a number and a name or message on the back, just like a proper shirt.

Perfect for: grandads who like a bit of football in every room.

Why it works: it is a gift he will see every day, and it is a lovely talking point when the grandchildren visit. For square styles, browse our wider cushions collection.

Personalisation idea: his surname and the number he wore for his works team or Sunday league side.

3. A Matching Christmas Fleece for Grandad and Baby

Our luxury football Christmas fleeces come in two sizes: a 150cm x 150cm standard blanket and a 75cm x 75cm baby fleece, sized for prams, cots and pushchairs. They use the same plush 370gsm fleece as our retro blankets, with festive club-colour designs.

Perfect for: a new grandad, or a family with a baby celebrating their first Christmas.

Why it works: a big one for Grandad and a little one for the newest fan makes the sweetest Christmas photo, and it passes on the family club from one generation to the next.

Personalisation idea: pair it with a matching item that carries both their names.

4. A Personalised Retro Door Mat

Our retro football door mats measure approximately 60cm x 40cm, with a non-slip rubber base and a polyester top. They are low profile so doors close easily, and they can go in the washing machine. The Newcastle 1996 Home Shirt Personalised Retro Door Mat is one example of a personalised design.

Perfect for: the proud fan who wants every visitor to know which team he supports before they have taken their coat off.

Why it works: it is useful, durable and full of character.

Personalisation idea: "Grandad's House" or the family surname.

5. A Personalised Bar Runner for His Shed or Home Bar

Our retro football bar runners measure 58cm x 22cm, with an absorbent polyester top on a non-slip rubber base, and are machine washable. Many can be personalised with a name or initial.

Perfect for: grandads with a home bar, a garden shed or a sideboard where the good glasses live.

Why it works: it catches the drips during festive fixtures and makes his corner of the house feel like his own little clubhouse.

Personalisation idea: "The Gaffer's Bar" or his name and favourite tipple.

6. Personalised Drink Coasters

Our football coasters are a handy small gift. The personalised retro shirt coasters, such as the Newcastle 1996 Home Shirt Personalised Drink Coaster, come in square or circle styles at 10cm x 10cm, with a fabric top and neoprene base.

Perfect for: stocking fillers, or a little extra from the grandchildren.

Why it works: he will use one every time he puts the kettle on, and it protects the coffee table while he watches the highlights.

Personalisation idea: a set with each grandchild's name on a different coaster.

7. A Retro Golf Towel for the Golfing Grandad

If Grandad swaps the terraces for the fairways at the weekend, our retro golf towels bring his club colours to the course. The Upload Your Own Design Football Golf Towel, for example, is approximately 63cm x 30cm, made from 300gsm microfibre with a non-rust clip, and lets you add your own pictures or text.

Perfect for: retired grandads who play a few rounds a week.

Why it works: it is practical, light to carry and a guaranteed conversation starter at the first tee.

Personalisation idea: his name with his handicap as the number, if he is brave enough.

8. Upload Your Own Design for His Old Team

Some grandads follow a non-league side, a club that has changed its name, or a team from the town where they grew up. Our upload your own design range lets you add your own pictures or text to products such as bar runners, golf towels and beach towels.

Perfect for: the grandad whose team is too special to be on anyone else's list.

Why it works: nothing is more personal than a design you have made for him, perhaps using an old family photo.

Personalisation idea: a photo of Grandad in his playing days with the year and his position.

Tips for Choosing a Football Gift for Grandad

• Go back to his era. Ask which kits he remembers from his youth or his best years following the team, then look for a design inspired by that period.
• Choose a meaningful number. His birth year, his old squad number, a wedding year or the number of grandchildren all add a personal story.
• Think practical. Grandads often love gifts they will use every day, so blankets, coasters and door mats tend to go down well.
• Get the grandchildren involved. Let them choose the message, or pick a matching item for themselves.
• Shopping for a Reds fan? Our retro Manchester Red gifts guide has five ideas picked just for them.

Things to Consider

• Double-check spellings. Every item is printed with exactly what you enter, so check names and nicknames carefully.
• No emojis. Our personalisation software does not support emojis, so keep to letters and numbers.
• Check sizes. Some products come in more than one size, such as the Christmas fleeces, so pick the right option.
• Not every design is personalised. Check the product page to see whether a name or number can be added.
• Allow time for production. Everything is made to order in Yorkshire, so order with time to spare and check the delivery information on our site for current timings, especially before Christmas.
